Book Review #22: City of Bones

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)Title: City of Bones.
Author: Cassandra Clare.
Format: Paperback.
Series: The Mortal Instruments.
Publisher: McElderry Books.
Published Date: April 2009.

Summary:

"When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know.... "

Cover Opinion: 5/5
I love the SHINY-NESS, and the city scape on the bottom! It just looks really great and ties everything together. When I first saw the book, I thought that they shouldn't have cut the head off and let us see the face. But after reading the book, I came to like it(:

Character-

Favorite:
I'm not exactly sure if this will change throughout the series, but for this book it would either have to be Clary or Simon. When you first meet Clary, she doesn't really have too many friends (actually just Simon) and doesn't fit in, but it's not like she minds it. But during this crazy adventure, you get to see Clary grow; becoming more confident and opening herself up to new and very different things, she becomes strong and brave! Girl Power!:D

On the other side of the universe! You don't really know very much about Simon at the beginning, besides his liking for Isabelle (another shadow hunter). *WARNING SPOILER!*, after reading along a little farther, you find out he was only trying to make Clary jealous, admitting his love for her. Simon isn't playing a huge role in the story, but he does seem like a sweet guy who would do anything for the girl he loves.

Least Favorite:
You would think every one's least favorite character would have to be Valentine, well wrong! Mine is Jocelyn (Clary's mother). How can someone lie to their child's face for fifteen years? How could you just have someone block your own kid's memories?

Storyline: 4/5
Theres only two things I didn't like about the storyline, so let me begin with those. There's was this huge hype (and still is) about this series, but when I first sat down and began reading, it was hard to get into. It just didn't seem to catch my attention, until about seven chapters in. The second thing, was that some parts just dragged on and on, but there was a lot of rockin' awesome action scenes(:

The book starts off at a night club, Clary and her best friend Simon are out in line, trying to get in. When they finally do, Clary happens to spot a man with a knife, dragging a boy she saw earlier into the back room. Not knowing what to do she runs after them, and what she sees changes her whole life.

Clary finds out that not only has her mother been lyng to her but also that she is part Shadow Hunter, her dads is a evil villain, the boy she's been crushing on is her "brother", her best friend is in love with her, and the man who was the closest father figure to her is part werewolf.

Will things ever be the same for her? Well, I guess your just going to have to read the book yourself to find out(;

  1. Totally agree, I wasn't too happy with Clary's mother... how dare she? Not only was she further harming her child by erasing her memories, but she was also lying to her on a day to day basis! what kind of trust is that?! either way, awesome review!

  3. Absolutely about Clary's mom! I know that she had her best interests at heart but... really? Doesn't exactly win the Best Mom of the Year award in my book.

Anyways, love this series :) Awesome review!
