Book Trailer: Abarat: Absolute Midnight

Abarat: Absolute Midnight, book #3 in the Abarat series! This one's already out in stores!

"“I know that many of you here have waited years for this Hour,” Mater Motley said, using that voice that, though it was barely conversational in volume, was somehow heard everywhere. “The waiting is over. Tomorrow there will be no dawn. Only midnight, absolute and eternal.”
And so begins a new chapter in the epic story of sixteen-year-old Candy Quackenbush and her journeys through the world of the Abarat, where every hour is an island in one eternal day, and nothing is as it seems.
Candy travels through the Abarat from island to island and across the sea with an unlikely band of friends: the escaped prisoner Malingo the Geshrat, the quarrelsome John Brothers, who all share the same body but never the same opinion, and the many other colorful characters they meet along the way.
The problem is that trouble finds Candy wherever she goes. And soon she discovers a secret plot, masterminded by the diabolical Mater Motley, who is obsessed with becoming Empress of the Islands. Her method is simple. She will darken the skies, putting out the suns, moons, and stars. She will bring absolute midnight."

Book Review #51: Mercy

Title: Mercy.
Author: Rebecca Lim.
Format: Hardback.
Pages: 280.
Source: Publisher, for review.
Publisher: Disney Hyperion.
Published Date: May 2011.

Summary:

"A fallen angel haunted by her past. Yearning for her immortal beloved. Forever searching for answers.Who will show her Mercy?

During the day she survives in the human world on instinct and at night her dreams are haunted by him. Mercy’s heart would know him anywhere. But her memory refuses to cooperate.
But this time is different. When Mercy wakes up she meets Ryan, an eighteen year old reeling from the loss of his twin sister who was kidnapped two years ago. Everyone else has given up hope, but Ryan believes his sister is still alive. Using a power she doesn’t fully comprehend, Mercy realizes that Ryan is right. His sister is alive and together they can find her. For the first time since she can remember, Mercy has a purpose; she can help. So she doesn’t understand why the man in her dreams cautions her not to interfere. But as Ryan and Mercy come closer to solving the dark mystery of his sister’s disappearance, danger looms just one step behind.
Will Mercy be able to harness her true self and extraordinary power in time?
The first in a dazzling new series, Mercy masterfully weaves romance, mystery and the supernatural into a spell-binding tale."

Cover:

Looking up this book, on either barnesandnobles.com, amazon, borders.com or goodreads, the picture does this cover no justice! Before judging it you MUST see it in person!

The whole sleeve is shimmery and shiny, the title is written out in a beautiful teal font, and when looking a bit closer, you can even see the girl's angel wings in the background.

I usually don't like covers with just a character, simply because you can't really guess what the story might be about! But the cover Mercy, has a dark background, and you can see the angel wings indented behind the character. Automatically, you can tell the story is about angels, and it might not always be a happy and light read, because it has it's dark parts too.

When it comes down to it, I'm a sucker for this cover! It looks amazing!:D

Characters-

Favorite:

Hands down, no questions asked, Mercy the main character. At first her story and life is a bit confusing and hard to understand. She doesn't live a normal life, like you and I do. Instead she travels from one body to the next, never really knowing when the change might happen and not having the chance to prevent it.

Least Favorite:

All schools, groups, and clubs, have a "mean girl". Yes, she's the one, who talks behind everyone's back, pushes you around and humiliates you in front of a big crowd.

In Mercy this girl happens to be Tiffany, who plays the perfect "mean girl" role. All the way from calling her friends names, to thinking she's the best at everything.

Story Line:

This time around Mercy inhabits the body of a girl name Carmen, who is on her way to chorus camp. Instead of staying in a log cabin, Mercy stays with a host family, who has been through a lot of their own problems; including losing their daughter.

Not only has Ryan (their son) lost his twin sister, but in a way, his parents too. While Ryan still believes his sister is somewhere out there alive, his parents have given up and settled with the idea of Lauren never coming back. But Ryan, on the other hand, doesn’t want to even think about that, and continues searching.

Wanting to help Mercy uses a few of her powers, to find out information; hoping to bring Ryan farther along with his search.

Will Mercy reveal her true self? Her powers? Whats really going on with her? And most importantly, was Ryan right to think his sister is alive? Will they find her?

I had a awesome time reading Mercy, and kept me on my toes throughout the whole story! I can't wait to finish the rest of the series(:

In My Mailbox #26

Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley.

""I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion." A summer evening's ghost stories, lonely insomnia in a moonlit Alpine's room, and a runaway imagination--fired by philosophical discussions with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley about science, galvanism, and the origins of life--conspired to produce for Marry Shelley this haunting night specter. By morning, it had become the germ of her Romantic masterpiece, Frankenstein."

Stealing Bases, by Keri Mikulski.

"Reformed mean girl Kylie Collins desperately wants to put the craziness of basketball season behind her. (And with it, her cheater ex, Zachary Murphy.) Maybe she'll finally be able to silence her snarky streak and concentrate on her lifelong dream - being recruited for Division One softball.

But when Kylie arrives at her first softball practice of the season, she comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare: Amber McDonald, the best pitcher in the state.

Now, Kylie's forced to warm the bench as Amber wows crowds again and again. With all the drama happening out on the softball diamond, Kylie finds herself drawn back to bad habits-sabotaging people and hanging out with a certain Zachary Murphy."

The Radleys, by Matt Haig.

"Just about everyone knows a family like the Radleys. Many of us grew up next door to one. They are a modern family, averagely content, averagely dysfunctional, living in a staid and quiet suburban English town. Peter is an overworked doctor whose wife, Helen, has become increasingly remote and uncommunicative. Rowan, their teenage son, is being bullied at school, and their anemic daughter, Clara, has recently become a vegan. They are typical, that is, save for one devastating exception: Peter and Helen are vampires and have—for seventeen years—been abstaining by choice from a life of chasing blood in the hope that their children could live normal lives.
One night, Clara finds herself driven to commit a shocking—and disturbingly satisfying—act of violence, and her parents are forced to explain their history of shadows and lies. A police investigation is launched that uncovers a richness of vampire history heretofore unknown to the general public. And when the malevolent and alluring Uncle Will, a practicing vampire, arrives to throw the police off Clara’s trail, he winds up throwing the whole house into temptation and turmoil and unleashing a host of dark secrets that threaten the Radleys’ marriage.
The Radleys is a moving, thrilling, and radiant domestic novel that explores with daring the lengths a parent will go to protect a child, what it costs you to deny your identity, the undeniable appeal of sin, and the everlasting, iridescent bonds of family love. Read it and ask what we grow into when we grow up, and what we gain—and lose—when we deny our appetites."

Book Review #50: Seranfyll

Title: Seranfyll.
Author: Christina Daley.
Format: E-Book.
Page: 338.
Series: Nope.
Source: Author.
Publisher: Create Space.
Published Date: July 2011.

Summary:

"For the first time in her life, Rain has a choice to make.

The thirteen-year-old slave girl lives in the country of Yoan, where slaves aren't allowed proper names, let alone anything else. After being sold by a gambler and bought by a thief, she's freed by an eccentric young noble, about whom many rumors abound. Some say his manor is haunted, his horse can fly, and that he's actually a devil.

Now that she's free, Rain must decide what she will do with that new freedom. Her choices will lead her to new friends and many adventures, none of which she could have possibly expected.

Fans of Harry Potter and Howl's Moving Castle will enjoy this magical tale about choices, consequences, and what it really means to be free."

Cover:

To be honest, I haven't really looked at the cover in too much detail. Why? Because I didn't purchase this book, I received a e-book copy for review.

With just seeing it on the computer screen, it looks okay. I don't really want to judge it, without seeing it in person.

Characters-

Favorite:

My favorite character has to be Lord Domrey. Even though, the first time we get to meet him, he's drunk and riding backwards on his horse, but throughout the story he can really grow on you.

Like anyone, he makes mistakes but he bought a lot of slaves (including Rain and Coal) and let them go free. He took both Rain and Coal in, considering them as part of his family. Buying them clothes, shoes, feeding them and letting them live with him.

Domrey, is just a really sweet guy, who only wants the best for everyone.

Least Favorite:

I think my least favorite would have to be Sneeble and Morgrav. Sneeble is the jerk who sells slaves, and treats them like animals. While Morgrav, is also rich just like Domrey. But unlike him, he treats his "slaves", just like Sneeble.

What I really liked towards the end of the book, was when Rain went in the market and saw Sneeble. He didn't even notice that she was one of the slaves, he sold to Domrey, Sneeble just thought she was just another royalty.

Story Line:

Being born into slavery, Rain and her sister Snow, have never known anything different. Lord Peachtree, was a nice guy and treated his slaves fairly, never punishing them cruelly.

But Lord Peachtree, was running low on money and after selling he's horses, a few of his servants, he had nothing left but to sell Rain. Not wanting to leave her sister, she was forced into the hands of a cruel slave trader named Sneeble.

While staying with him, she meet a few other slaves including Coal. A skinny boy, who had just been in a fight. When Lord Domrey, rides into the market drunk and backwards on his horse, he offers to buy all of Sneebles slaves.

Giving them their name papers and setting them free, only Rain and Coal stayed with poor Domrey. Not wanting to leave he drunk and alone, they take it into their hands to take care of him.

I had a great time reading Seranfyll, even though I don't really like reading books on my computer, unless I REALLY have to. But I really liked it, it was something new and fresh. Nothing with vampires, or werewolves, or even angels!

Teaser Tuesday #24: Seranfyll

1."And the last person she saw was Domrey as he looked down from the roof."

2."Rain turned the page. "This is a book of his secrets."
"It's a fake," Morgrav grumbled. "Where's the real one?"
She closed the book. "I don't know.""

I'll be posting my review later tonight!!:D

Book Review #49: Calli

Title: Calli.
Author: Jessica Lee Anderson.
Format: ARC.
Pages: 184.
Series: Nope.
Source: Twitter contest.
Publisher: Milkweed Editions.
Published Date: September 13, 2011.

Summary:

"Fifteen-year-old Calli has just about everything she could want in life—two loving moms, a good-looking boyfriend, and a best friend who has always been there for support. An only child, Calli is excited when her parents announce that they want to be foster parents. Unfortunately, being a foster sister to Cherish is not at all what Calli expected. First Cherish steals Calli’s boyfriend, then begins to pit Calli’s moms against one another, and she even steals Calli’s iPod. Tired of being pushed around and determined to get even, Calli steals one of Cherish’s necklaces. But this plan for revenge goes horribly awry, and Cherish ends up in juvenile detention.
Isolating herself from her moms, her boyfriend, and even her best friend, Calli wrestles with her guilt and tries to figure out a way to undo the damage she’s caused. When her moms are asked to take on another foster child, Calli sees an opportunity to make amends for her past mistakes.
Funny, moving, and emotionally rich, Calli is a portrait of an endearing young woman caught between adolescence and adulthood, striving to do the right thing even when all of her options seem wrong."

Cover:

I don't feel that this cover, does the story inside justice. Yeah, were not suppose to judge a book by it's cover, but were all human and it's what we do.

First entering the contest to win this book, I wasn't really sure what Calli was, I never heard of it before than. But I'm always open to trying new things.

When the book arrived and I saw the cover, I wasn't really sure if I still wanted to read it. It really didn't pull me in; it just wasn't anything too special or fancy. Giving it a chance anyways, I loved the story! It was something that I've never read before! It was freakin' awesome!

Characters-

Favorite:

I usually like characters that I can easily relate to, or could be friends with (or that have super powers). In this book, my favorite is the main character, fifteen year old Calli.

No, I'm not fifteen, I don't have any foster brothers or sisters, and I have a dad. But like Calli, I used to be a bit over weight, I was shy and quiet most of the time, and I just let people treat me however they wanted. Even though, I changed all of that, thanks to blogging and going into high school, I still can connect and understand how she's feeling and what she's going through.

I wish Calli would have grown throughout the story more; maybe become more confident, and stronger, and just burst out of her shell. But I still really liked her, and had an awesome time reading about her(:

Least Favorite:

I think my least favorite person would have to be Cherish, even though I grew to like a tiny bit by the end of the book.

Yeah she's had a rough life, being pushed from one home to the next, but come on! These people are so nice to you, and treat you like their own daughter, why would you mess things up? For once you have a good home, and you ruin things by kissing Calli's boyfriend, stealing her stuff, and lying to her parents? Why would you even consider doing that to total strangers that were nice enough to take you in?

Story Line:

First meeting Calli, you get to know right away she's shy, quiet, and keeps to herself, not wanting any trouble. She has a great boyfriend, and two awesome moms.

Her step mom grew up in foster care, knowing how it feels to be move from one house to another; never really have a place to call home. So the small family decided on fostering a girl named Cherish, knowing that she's a troubled teen.

Calli, never having a sister before, is really excited. Well, that is until Cherish steals her things, her parents attention, kisses her boyfriend, and lies to everyone's face.

Calli was a kind of book that I've never read before. In a way it reminded me of Sarah Dessen's book and her writing style. Even though, it was a bit short, and I wanted to know more about what happened to Cherish and how things are going for Lemond, I loved it! I can't wait to read more from Jessica Anderson(:

In My Mailbox #24

Happy Sunday!!

I know, I usually like making vlogs to show you guys what I got throughout the week, but it's already six thirty and my lighting just sucks. A post will be just fine too!

Here's what I got:

Burn Bright, by Marianne De Pierres.

"In Ixion music and party are our only beliefs. Darkness is our comfort. We have few rules but they are absolute . . .

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom.

But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him. Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother.

When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion?

Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly. Will friendship, and the creation of an eternal bond with a Riper, be enough to save her from the darkness?

Listen well, baby bats. Burn bright, but do not stray from the paths. Remember, when you live in a place of darkness you also live with creatures of the dark."

Angel Arias, by Marianne De Pierres.

"In the sequel to Burn Bright, Naif is caught in the unrest on the island owned by the pirate, Ruzalia. To stop Ruzalia harming the rebels, and to uncover more answers to the mysteries of Ixion, she has to return to Grave. There she confronts her domineering father and the sinister Grave Elders."

Shadowfever, by Karen Marie Moning.

"“Evil is a completely different creature, Mac. Evil is bad that believes it’s good.” MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina, were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever.
Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister’s murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals who have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.
What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh—a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King, containing the power to create and destroy worlds.
In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves. Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman haunting her dreams? More important, who is Mac herself and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card? From the luxury of the Lord Master’s penthouse to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover..."
Fade, by Lisa McMann.

"SOME NIGHTMARES NEVER END.
For Janie and Cabel, real life is getting tougher than the dreams. They're just trying to carve out a little (secret) time together, but no such luck.
Disturbing things are happening at Fieldridge High, yet nobody's talking. When Janie taps into a classmate's violent nightmares, the case finally breaks open — but nothing goes as planned. Not even close. Janie's in way over her head, and Cabe's shocking behavior has grave consequences for them both.
Worse yet, Janie learns the truth about herself and her ability — and it's bleak. Seriously, brutally bleak. Not only is her fate as a dream catcher sealed, but what's to come is way darker than she'd feared...."

Gone, by Lisa McMann.

"Janie thought she knew what her future held. And she thought she’d made her peace with it. But she can’t handle dragging Cabel down with her.
She knows he will stay with her, despite what she sees in his dreams. He’s amazing. And she’s a train wreck. Janie sees only one way to give him the life he deserves—she has to disappear. And it’s going to kill them both.
Then a stranger enters her life—and everything unravels. The future Janie once faced now has an ominous twist, and her choices are more dire than she’d ever thought possible. She alone must decide between the lesser of two evils. And time is running out...."

Netgalley Review #49: Blood

Title: Blood.
Author: K. J. Wignall.
Format: E-book.
Pages: 272.
Series: Yes, #1.
Source: Netgalley.
Publisher: EgmontUSA.
Published Date: September 27, 2011.

Summary:

"Will is a vampire in danger. Heir to the Earl of Mercia, he was brutally attacked and buried in the thirteenth century before he was able to assume his title. Perpetually sixteen, Will’s life has been lonely. He leaves his tomb every so often, adapts to the present day, feeds his bloodlust, and never gets close to anyone.
Until now.
Waking from a twenty-year slumber, hungry for the blood that sustains his undeath, he meets Eloise—but can’t bear to make her his next victim. Drawn to a girl he can never have, but whose fate seems bound with his own, he feels the need to protect her. But Will has an enemy who will stop at nothing to find him . . . and he’s closing in. . . ."

Cover:

I know, I know!! Usually I like cover's where you might be able to guess what the story is about, but than again who doesn't like a cover with a cute, dark, mysterious, and shirtless guy on it? I sure do(;

Characters-

Favorite:

I really liked the main character Will (a.k.a the hot guy on the cover), not just because of the way he acted, the way he treated Ella (Eloise), but also his past was really interesting.

I think when people hear "vampire" they automatically think Twilight, and Edward Cullen. But Will is so different, he doesn't act all weird, he doesn't treat Ella like she's glass, and doesn't have super strength powers. I just think, even Will is hundreds of years old, he's still down to earth.

Least Favorite:

Honestly, I don't think I have a least favorite character! Will was nice, his relationship with Ella was interesting. the help they received from two of their friends, which wasn't trusted at first, ended up being another reason why I continued reading.

Story Line:

I LOVED it, it even left me wanting more (not the cliff hanger kind, but the OMG that was A-mazing, I want more kind).

Even though not much went on, it was a lot of leading up to the next book, especially since it's the first to a series. It did have some action towards the end, when they confronted the man who bit Will. But again leaving    a lot out for the rest of the series.

Blood comes out on September 27, and you should definitely get yourself a copy!:D

Teaser Tuesday #23: Blood

"It was very still, the air hazy with the strange light from the windows, but there was a troubling feeling about the place and Will couldn't quite work out what it was."

"It was all at once strange and terrifying and full of promise, a promise that this prison, its wall made of time itself, had all been for some purpose."

In My Mailbox #23

Thirst, by Christopher Pike.

"As to blood --
ah, blood, the whole subject fascinates me. I do like that as well, warm and dripping, when I am thirsty. And I am often thirsty....
Alisa has been in control of her urges for the five thousand years she has been a vampire. She feeds but does not kill, and she lives her life on the fringe to maintain her secret. But when her creator returns to hunt her, she must break her own rules in order to survive.
Her quest leads her to Ray. He is the only person who can help her; he also has every reason to fear her. Alisa must get closer to him to ensure her immortality. But as she begins to fall in love with Ray, suddenly there is more at stake than her own life...."

Elixir, by Hilary Duff.

"Clea Raymond is a talented photojournalist and the daughter of high-profile parents. Usually she’s in total control of her camera, but after Clea’s father disappears while on a humanitarian mission, eerie, shadowy images of a strange and handsome young man begin to appear in Clea’s photos—a man she has never seen in her life.
When Clea suddenly encounters this man in person she is stunned—and feels an immediate and powerful connection. As they grow closer, they are drawn deep into the mystery behind her father’s disappearance and discover the centuries-old truth behind their intense bond. Torn by a dangerous love triangle and haunted by a powerful secret that holds their fate, together they race against time to unravel their past in order to save their future—and their lives."

My Life Undecided, by Jessica Brody.

"PLEASE READ THIS! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!
Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment.
Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure.
But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else decide which book I read for English. And whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated!
Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever.
But don’t take my word for it. Read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life."

Forever Summer, by Alyson Noel.

"Summer. A break from the burdens of school. Deep tans, deeper thoughts. Far away from the everyday. Closer to making dreams come true . . . What does summer mean to you? For the two teenage girls in these two unforgettable novels, summer means being torn away from the familiar and finding new friends. A new place in the world. A new sense of self. And maybe even new love along the way . . .
When you’re having the time of your life, you never want it to end."

Leaving Paradise, by Simone Elkeles.

"Nothing has been the same since Caleb Becker left a party drunk, got behind the wheel, and hit Maggie Armstrong. Even after months of painful physical therapy, Maggie walks with a limp. Her social life is nil and a scholarship to study abroad—her chance to escape everyone and their pitying stares—has been canceled.
After a year in juvenile jail, Caleb’s free . . . if freedom means endless nagging from a transition coach and the prying eyes of the entire town. Coming home should feel good, but his family and ex-girlfriend seem like strangers.
Caleb and Maggie are outsiders, pigeon-holed as "criminal" and "freak." Then the truth emerges about what really happened the night of the accident and, once again, everything changes. It’s a bleak and tortuous journey for Caleb and Maggie, yet they end up finding comfort and strength from a surprising source: each other."

School?!

Hey Dolls!

Welcome to Turning Pages everyone! Today I just wanted to make a quick update, nothing big.

School:

As we all know, school has just started, or started a few weeks ago for some of you. Mine began last Wednesday, and it's been stressful ever since. I haven't even had the time to pick up a book since Tuesday night.

Now that it's finally the weekend, I can just relax and read as much as I want. I'm trying to finish three e-books and two actual books by Sunday night....wish me luck!

Giveaways:

As of right now I have two giveaways up, if you haven't entered make sure to do so. There are tons of extra entry opportunities, so take advantage of those!

I've been promising a 250 follower giveaway ever since I've had 100 followers. Now with 247, I only need 3 more! As soon as my followers hit 250, I'll be posting my awesome giveaway.

It has four prize packs, each with one book and some cool swag!

Reviews:

When I first began blogging I would just post a book review, whenever I finished the book. But now I try and post reviews every three days.

I hope to finish more books, so that I can post reviews every two days instead of three.

Sorry that this was a random post, but they were just a few small things I needed to get off my chest. But thanks for stopping by!:D

Book Review #48: Beautiful Creatures

Title: Beautiful Creatures.
Author: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
Format: Paperback.
Pages: 563.
Series: Yes #1.
Source: Barnes and Noble.
Publisher: Little Brown.
Published Date: December 1, 2009.

Summary:

"Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything."

Cover:

LOVE IT! I love the dark background, and the bright purple "Beautiful Creatures"; it really pops!

When you look closely in the background you can see a forest too, which makes this book seem dark and creepy. Even though there wasn't much about a dark forest in the book, there was a lot of dark powers and things going on.

Characters-

Favorite:

My favorite would have to be Ethan! He just seems like the perfect guy. When he first sees Lena, he doesn't know why, but he wants to protect her:from all of the other girls at school.

Even when Lena was trying to push him away, he still kept trying and letting her know that he's there for her.

He just seems really sweet!(:

Least Favorite:

I liked Lena because she was so different than all of the other teenage girls in this small town; she looked different, acted different and treated people differently.

But during some parts of the story I just wanted to yell into the book, because of the way she felt sorry for herself. "Oh Ethan we can never be together!", well why not? You always talk about how you have no friends, and now that someone's trying to get close with you, your pushing them away? How much sense does that make?

Story Line:

We all know that in small towns or even small neighborhoods word travels fast. Before you know it, everyone knows your business, doesn't matter if you're cheating on your wife, running out of money, or moving in with your uncle a.k.a the town creep.

When Lena moves into the small town, everyone knows. No one's seen her uncle in over ten years, so when his niece moves in, people either feel sorry or scared.

But not Ethan, as a matter of fact, he actually wants to get to know Lena more, spend time with her, and always be around her. Not sure why, but he even wants to protect her from all the teasing of other students.

Some loves are meant to be, while others are cursed...which one are they?

Awesome book, even though it was a monster!

Book Review #47: Rules of Attraction

Title: Rules of Attraction.
Author: Simone Elkeles.
Format: Hardback.
Pages: 366.
Series: Yes #2.
Source: Barnes and Noble.
Publisher: Walker & Company.
Published Date: April 13, 2010.

Summary:

"When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for the past year, he doesn't want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him in Colorado. When he meets Kiara Westford, a good girl totally unlike any of the girls he's usually drawn to, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she's too good for him. But will he put his pride aside when he realizes that being with Kiara might finally allow him to be his true self?"

Cover:

I have to admit the cover of Perfect Chemistry was....awkward, to say the least. I don't know if I would want to be seen out reading it. The way Alex is just laying over Brittany is just weird, maybe it's just too lovey dovey for me!

But thank goodness this cover is sooo much better! It's cute! I mean who wouldn't want to be kissed in the rain? And their in cars, reaching out, just to kiss each other!? AWWW!

Characters-

If you have read a few of my reviews before, than you know I usually have a favorite and least favorite character in every book (or at least something that someone did, that bothered me). But this time my favorite character is also my least favorite...is that even possible? I don't even know!

But it's Carlos! He was just hilarious at times, but at other times, I just wanted to grab him by the shoulders, shake him, and tell him to open his eyes to see whats right in front of him!

Maybe, halfway through Rules of Attraction I just wanted him to get off his high horse and get over his pride. If you like her who cares what someone might think? If you are willing to do anything for her (like Alex would for Brittany) then do it!

Story Line:

After Alex went off to college with Brittany, Carlos, Louis and their mom moved back to Mexico. Hearing that Carlos joined a gang, he forced him to come back from Mexico and move in with him; so he wouldn't be around that and would focus more on school.

Both Alex and Carlos, soon find out that Alex's student apartment (or dorm, same thing) was too small for the both of them, one of Alex's old professors invites Carlos to live with them. Feeling like a fish out of water, Carlos' feelings for Kiara (the professor's daughter) wasn't making things much easier.

I had such a great time reading Rules of Attraction, and I can't wait to read Chain Reactions, even though I don't want the series to end! I love Simone Elkeles' writing style, and how she includes real Spanish! If you haven't checked out this series, than you REALLY need to!

In My Mailbox #22 (vlog)

The Near Witch, by Victoria Schwab.

"The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near.
These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy."

Mercy, by Rebecca Lim.

"A fallen angel haunted by her past. Yearning for her immortal beloved. Forever searching for answers.Who will show her Mercy?
Mercy has lost herself. She can’t count how many times she’s “woken up” in a new body, and assumed a new life, only to move on again and again.
Will Mercy be able to harness her true self and extraordinary power in time?"

Girl Wonder, by Alexa Martin.

"As if transferring senior year weren't hard enough, Charlotte Locke has been bumped to lower level classes at her new school. With no friends, a terrible math SAT score, and looming college application deadlines, the future is starting to seem like an oncoming train for which she has no ticket.
Then Amanda enters her orbit like a hot-pink meteor, offering Charlotte a ticket to something else: popularity. Amanda is fearless, beautiful, brilliant, and rich. As her new side kick, Charlotte is brought into the elite clique of the debate team—and closer to Neal, Amanda's equally brilliant friend and the most perfect boy Charlotte has ever seen.
But just when senior year is looking up, Charlotte’s life starts to crumble. The more things heat up between Charlotte and Neal, the more Neal wants to hide their relationship. Is he ashamed? Meanwhile, Amanda is starting to act strangely competitive, and she's keeping a secret Charlotte doesn't want to know.
Talented newcomer Alexa Martin delivers a poignant story of first love, jealousy and friendship, where the ups and downs of senior year have never been so complicated. What else can Charlotte do but throw her hands up and ride?"

Putting Makeup On Dead People, by Jen Violi.

"In the spring of her senior year, Donna Parisi finds new life in an unexpected place: a coffin.
Since her father’s death four years ago, Donna has gone through the motions of living: her friendships are empty, she’s clueless about what to do after high school graduation, and her grief keeps her isolated, cut off even from the one parent she has left. That is until she’s standing in front of the dead body of a classmate at Brighton Brothers’ Funeral Home. At that moment, Donna realizes what might just give her life purpose is comforting others in death. That maybe who she really wants to be is a mortician.
This discovery sets in motion a life Donna never imagined was possible. She befriends a charismatic new student, Liz, notices a boy, Charlie, and realizes that maybe he's been noticing her, too, and finds herself trying things she hadn’t dreamed of trying before. By taking risks, Donna comes into her own, diving into her mortuary studies with a passion and skill she didn’t know she had in her. And she finally understands that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting someone you love.
Jen Violi’s heartfelt and funny debut novel is a story of transformation—how one girl learns to grieve and say goodbye, turn loss into a gift, and let herself be exceptional...at loving, applying lipstick to corpses, and finding life in the wake of death."

Calli, by Jessica Lee Anderson.

When her moms are asked to take on another foster child, Calli sees an opportunity to make amends for her past mistakes."

Saving June, by Hannah Harrington.

"Harper Scott, trying to come to terms with her perfect older sister June's suicide, takes a road trip and finds love with a mysterious boy who had a connection to June-- and may know more about her sister's life and death than he's telling."

ARC Review #46: Shut Out

Title: Shut Out.
Author: Kody Keplinger.
Format: ARC.
Pages: 288.
Series: Nope.
Publisher: Little Brown.
Published Date: September 5, 2011.

Summary:

"Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it's a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part,Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy's car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend's attention.
Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players' girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won't get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don't count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. And Lissa never sees her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling, coming."

Cover:

I usually like covers, where you can guess what the story might be about before you even turn the book around and read the summary! Yeah, yeah, don't judge a book by it's cover, but truth be told, that's what pulls in interest. Unlike just a face, or a girl in a dress, or any character for that matter.

Obviously this cover has a face, but I'm actually really liking it. The black paint stripes tells a lot about the story! It has something to do with sports, my guess was football, and since it's a girl on the cover, maybe girls sports? Or boys against girls?

Characters-

Favorite:

Lissa (the main character) and Chelsea (and her bestfriend), all the way!

Even though Lissa was a little over protective of her brother and dad, it was understandable. Her mother passed away in a car crash and she doesn't want to lose some else who's really important to her. She seems like someone I could be close friends with.

While Lissa is more conservative, Chelsea is crazy! She's hilarious, she's open about everything; including her love for sex. Not caring what any of the over girls think, Chelsea admits to liking sex, and just because she's a girl doesn't mean she's not allowed to. Chelsea is really funny and I had a great time reading about her.

Least Favorite:

In Shut Out, I didn't really dislike anyone, all of the characters were really interesting; especially Chelsea!

When Lissa started this "hook up" strike, she did it because her boyfriend, Randy, was paying more attention to their High School, football and soccer rivalry, than her. She was tired of it. Getting together with a few of the other players' girlfriends, they decided not to give them sex, until they finally ended the rivalry.

But throughout this strike, Lissa lost her focus. Instead of doing this for the strike to end, she was doing it for herself; cause another rivalry, but this time between the girls and the boys.

I think this was the only thing that would bother me. Instead of noticing that the boys were done fighting with each, and actually started working together to finally get their girlfriends back, Lissa just kept pushing the girls farther away.

Story Line:

School rivalries? Yep, very high school has them. But ever heard of a rivalry between the football team and soccer team of the SAME school? No? Well of course not!

But at Hamilton High School, that's how it's been for a long time. So long the players don't even remember how it all started.

When Lissa, the girlfriend of the football team's quarterback, gets tired of this rivalry, she starts a sex strike. Of course she can't do this alone, so she gets a few of the players' girlfriends, and her best friend Chelsea (who doesn't actually date any player, but does occasionally have sex with a select few) together; agreeing not to have sex until the rivalry stops.

Instead of just ending one rivalry, Lissa and the girls start a whole new one; this time between themselves and the boys.

I had a great time reading Shut Out! It was HILARIOUS, and I can't wait to read more from Kody Keplinger(: Especially The DUFF!
