Book Review #20: Wake

Wake (Dream Catcher, #1)Title: Wake.
Author: Lisa McMann.
Format: Paperback.
Series: Wake Trilogy.
Publisher: Simon Pulse.
Published Date: March 4, 2008.

Summary:

"Not all dreams are sweet.

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant...."

Cover Opinion: 2/5
Honestly? There's a pillow on the cover! Lame. But I liked that the word WAKE, is really large and doesn't fit on the cover all the way(:

Characters-

Favorite:
The person I find really interesting, is Cabel (Janie's "boyfriend", sorta). Being someone totally different than you would think; *WARNING SPOILER* when you first get to know him, his a slacker, who doesn't care about his grades, falls asleep in class, shows up late, if at all and the usual slacker things. But later throughout the book, you find out that he works, almost like a undercover agent. He already has a free ride through college, having excellent grades, living alone, and getting paid BIG bucks. Finding this out I was in complete shock, I would of never predicted this to happen!:O

Least:
Janie's mom! You don't actually get to meet her, but she just doesn't seem like she cares a lot about her own daughter. She doesn't bother to help around the house, so everything is left for Janie to do, the same Janie that has a part time job, and still goes to school!

Storyline: 4/5

Janie has the ability to go into other dreams, but sadly she can't control it. No matter where shes at, wither it's while she's driving, at school, or even while Janie's sleeping she can get sucked into dreams (started when she was about 13). Her first experience was at a sleep over. These dreams are either nightmares, or have sexual content (usually body parts are exaggerated).
When Janie meets Cabel, (after a dance, he kindly gave her a ride home on his skateboard), she gets sucked into a lot of his dreams, and starts to have feelings for him. Building a connection with him, she wants to not only help him but others through their dreams, always reminding them that it's their dream and they can change it to whatever they want(:

Ending Opinion: 5/5

All it did was leave me wanting more. In a way it was a cliff hanger, Janie made the huge decision to start working for the same people Cabel worked for! Also Cabel and Janie's relationship ended on good terms, so that was pretty cute too!:D

  1. Aw, I love this book! Yes, the cover could've used a little more umph, but I like that the pillow is at least related to the story, you know?

Anyway, this book was definitely a pleasant surprise. The end was so good too, that I wanted a sequel right away. :)
