YA Guys Vs. The Real Ones!

Who doesn't want to be called beautiful or smart, or the center of someone else's universe? Who wouldn't want to be absolutely cherished by someone? And constantly be on their mind?

Every single girl does!! If you're a guy reading this right now, TRUST ME, its true! I'm a girl, and I know!

We love hearing sweet things, we love checking our phones to see if we've received any cute messages, and we love the small meaningful things guys do for us. They make us happy and they just brighten our day, no matter how bad it was.

But let's all come back down to earth and get serious...

No real guy is like that, and maybe that's why I enjoy reading YA romance stories so much? Or maybe I'm just a big weirdo..

But okay I give it to you guys out there reading this, you do say sweet things every ONCE in a while, but it's usually followed by something that's totally not what a girl would have imagined to come next, and you throw us off.

While in YA reads, you constantly witness a teenage boy pouring out his heart and promising the rest of his life to a girl he just barely met. I don't know any guy that would do that in real life.

And recently I've realized this happening in many books, constantly thinking that no REAL guy would be caught saying this to a girl! So I've decided to rant about it (if you can't tell) and ask what you guys think of this idea.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Series, by Jenny Han.

"I just-want to always know that you're okay. It's important to me."

....suuure..

The 5th Wave, by Rick Yancey.

"'If your job is to kill us, why didn't you kill me?' I ask. He answers without hesitating, as if he's decided long before I asked the question what his answer would be. 'Because I'm in love with you.'"

IN love? Nope.

Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell.

"I miss you, Eleanor. I want to be with you all the time. You're the smartest girl I've ever met, and the funniest, and everything you do surprises me. And I wish I could say that those reasons are the reasons I like you, because that would make me sound like a really evolved human being..."

Eleanor & Park starts about the beginning of the school year, or atleast that's when Eleanor first meets Park. And this quote takes place before Christmas, meaning they've barely know each other two months, and Park is already pouring out his heart to her!

Do you think a real guy would do that? NO.

I'm not saying that it bothers me, I actually like melt every time I read something like the quotes included above. Books are supposed to be different than the real world, and when I read them I want something that I don't get in real life, because if they weren't why would I be reading them? And if I can't get a real guy to say this things to me, why not pretend a YA guy is?! (Haha...?)

Thank you for stopping by, and please feel free to comment down below!

  1. Sometimes I feel like reading too many books is giving me a false sense of how love stories are supposed to be. Which in turn, makes me have very unrealistic expectations of my own love story. Because real life is never as exciting and thrilling as those books portray, I feel disappointed big time. I wish to find someone who is like the ones in stories, but I don't think it's very probable and that I'm just a day dreamer. It's hard to say if I would ever let go of these crushes and fantasies (I don't think I want to), but I will try my best to grow up and be mature about it!

  2. Yep, I'm agreeing with you here. >_< I have a brother...aaaand, gosh, I can't even get him to SAY he likes his girlfriend! Is it some unspoken (ha) code? You can't admit feelings or you're not a "man"?? I mean, it's kind of ridiculous. But I know guys are NOT normally romantic or voice their feelings well. Do authors write it because they wish it was like that? *sigh* It's weird.
But I guess it can be the same for any aspect of life. People aren't normally as witty as they are in books. People don't usually react like they do in books (like, I hardly read anything about low-blood-sugar drops, or being cranky when you're hungry, or smelling bad). I LOVE books and I'll never stop, but sometimes I do find it disappointing how detached from real life they are. *shrugs* Anyway. AWESOME post, Lisa.
