Book Excerpt: Pretty Little Lies

Welcome to Turning Pages!

Today I have a special surprise; a excerpt of Jennifer Miller's Pretty Little Lies! I hope you guys and enjoy and if you're interested in Pretty Little Lies, and want to read more about it, there's links below that will take you Goodreads, Facebook, etc! Comment down below, I would love to hear what you think!

Excerpt:

"I was the best baseball player on our team in college. My batting average was an amazing three ninety-six. Other players were close, but no one could outdo me. I would have definitely gone to the pros too if I hadn’t ripped a tendon in my shoulder.”
When he started this story he was just finding his love of baseball in junior high. Yes, it has gone on that long. Aside from the fact he loves to talk about himself and I’ve barely gotten a word in, this whole conversation is happening between him and my boobs. Not once has he made eye contact with me. Not. Once. Even when he introduced himself, he was looking at my chest. I wonder if he thinks they are going to start talking back to him.
“Tell me about what you do for a living.” I try to steer the conversation in a different direction.

Pretty Little Lies“I’m getting there,” he says brushing me off. “So after I hurt my shoulder, I tried to continue playing ball, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that my baseball career was over….” I’m barely listening to him. I just nod and make humming noises where it seems appropriate, while inhaling my tasty pasta. I briefly hope I’m not looking like a pig in front of him, but then I realize he doesn’t even notice - he’s still staring at my boobs. I wonder if I shake them in a shimmy, if his face would move quickly back and forth in time with my breasts. It could be amusing to test that theory.
I sigh to myself. I guess I have only myself to blame. I mean after we were seated I did ask him to tell me about himself. I just didn’t know that he would go on and on and on. He hasn’t asked one thing about me. At least I know why the man is still single.
“Are you finished, Miss?” The waiter is standing next to me and I didn’t even notice him appear, given my inner monologue. I look down to realize I am finished.
“Oh, um, yes, thank you very much.”
He looks to Daniel, “Sir?”
“Yes, I’m finished too,” he tells the waiter while still looking at my breasts. I can’t help it, I shake them just a little and holy hell! His head does move side to side a bit. Oh man, just wait until I tell Pyper about this. She’s going to tease me for days about how my boobs have magical mesmerizing abilities."

About The Book:

"A little lie can change the course of everything. . . Like every other eighteen-year-old in love, Olivia has dreams of spending forever with the love of her life. Luke is all she’s ever wanted – until she overhears something she was never meant to. In a matter of seconds, Olivia’s heart is shattered. Olivia handles it the only way she knows how - she runs- leaving behind her family, friends and the boy she loves. Seeking comfort and an escape, Olivia finds it in resident bad boy Deacon. He’s everything Luke isn’t – and that’s fine with Olivia. Now, seven years later, Olivia is older, wiser and headed back to Chicago looking forward to a fresh start and reconnecting with her best friend Pyper. What she doesn’t expect, is to come face to face with the boy she left behind and discover that even though she may have left, her feelings for him didn’t. Can Olivia put aside the pain in her heart and trust Luke? Will the ties to her past ever let her go, or will she continue to let her life be affected by pretty little lies?"

Jennifer Miller"Author Jennifer Miller was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, but now calls Arizona home. Jennifer’s love of reading began when she was a small child, and only continued to grow as she entered adulthood. Ever since winning a writing contest at the young age of nine, when she wrote a book about a girl with a pet unicorn, she’s dreamed of writing a book of her own. Quickly learning that dreams don’t just fall into your lap, she knew she had to chase them herself and not be afraid to dream a little bigger. Book Review: Fragments

Fragments (Partials, #2)Title: Fragments.
Author: Dan Wells.
Format: Hardback.
Pages: 564.
Series: Yes, #2.
Source: Library.
Publisher: Blazer + Bray.
Published Date: 2/26/13
Summary:

"Kira Walker has found the cure for RM, but the battle for the survival of humans and Partials is just beginning. Kira has left East Meadow in a desperate search for clues to who she is. That the Partials themselves hold the cure for RM in their blood cannot be a coincidence—it must be part of a larger plan, a plan that involves Kira, a plan that could save both races. Her companions are Afa Demoux, an unhinged drifter and former employee of ParaGen, and Samm and Heron, the Partials who betrayed her and saved her life, the only ones who know her secret. But can she trust them? Meanwhile, back on Long Island, what's left of humanity is gearing up for war with the Partials, and Marcus knows his only hope is to delay them until Kira returns. But Kira's journey will take her deep into the overgrown wasteland of postapocalyptic America, and Kira and Marcus both will discover that their greatest enemy may be one they didn't even know existed."

Cover:

I loved the cover on Partials, but I am a bit bummed that the cover of Fragments looks almost the same. I wish the same picture of the girl from the first cover wasn't just copied and pasted into this cover.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved Partials and couldn't wait to get started on Fragments; I already had Fragments cracked open before I could completely close Partials. What got me hooked on the story and made me crave the second book, was the world Dan Wells built, and the characters who are living in it. With 99% of the world's population wiped out due to war, and not being able to reproduce, due to the RM virus, the numbers are continuing to dwindle.

Partials leaves off when Kira has successfully found a cure to the pregnancy epidemic and saved the young life of her best friend's daughter. Leaving behind a small amount of cure for Marcus to test, Kira leaves to go to the big city and find out who she is and why she was created. On her search she funs into a man named Afa, who thinks he's the only human left; he's a bit crazy, but also really smart, I like him!

With Afa's knowledge on the ParaGen, and computers, Kira, Samm and Heron can find out what's really going on. But those computers are located in ParaGen headquarters, which are in Denver. But to try their luck, they stop at a closer headquarter in Chicago! (Lots of traveling)

In the first book the reader was introduced to a lot of the main characters, such as Kira, Marcus, Samm, and a few of their friends. In Fragments we are introduced to a few smaller characters such as Heron, Samm's partner and the evil Dr. Morgan. If you read my review on Partials, you should already know, I really like a lot of the characters. In Fragments I feel the same way. Heron is more relaxed, makes jokes, and keeps things a bit funny. Dr. Morgan is evil, but a good...villian? Fragments had amazing character development which kept me interested in characters we already knew from the first book.

I usually like to add a bit of a summary and my thoughts of the ending, but I want to give NOTHING away! I can't believe the way Fragments left readers off, and I'm dying to see what happens next!

Overall Fragments was fantastic! The characters were awesome, the world Dan Wells created is interesting and scary at the same time, because I feel like that could really happen! While the beginning of the book pulled me in, the ending caused my head to explode, the middle was a bit of a drag. I feel that it could have been shortened a bit when the characters were doing a lot of traveling. But I promise you that the ending will make up for the slow parts before it!

TBR: June

Welcome to Turning Pages!

A while back I decided to start each month by writing a TBR list of the books I was hoping to read and review within that month, and end each month with a review, where I list all the titles and links to each post that I had written throughout those thirty or so days. I haven't really been sticking to that plan, but here I am trying once again!

If you've read one of the books mentioned below, or if you just can't wait to read one of them, comment down below with your thoughts, I would love to hear them!

Fallen (Fallen, #1)Fallen by Lauren Kate

"There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori. Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce – he goes out of his way to make that very clear. But she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Luce has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her."

Tiger's Quest (The Tiger Saga, #2)Tiger's Quest by Colleen Houck

"Back in Oregon, Kelsey tries to pick up the pieces of her life and push aside her feelings for Ren. But danger lurks around the corner, forcing her to return to India where she embarks on a second quest--this time with Ren's dark, bad-boy brother Kishan, who has also fallen prey to the Tiger's Curse. Fraught with danger, spellbinding dreams, and choices of the heart, TIGER'S QUEST brings the trio one step closer to breaking the spell that binds them."

The Clock Of LifeClock of Life by Nancy Klann-Moren

"In the small town of Hadlee, Mississippi, during the 1980's, Jason Lee Rainey struggles to find his way amongst the old, steadfast Southern attitudes about race, while his friendship with a black boy, Samson Johnson, deepens. By way of stories from others, Jason Lee learns about his larger-than-life father, who was killed in Vietnam. He longs to become that sort of man, but doesn't believe he has it in him. In The Clock Of Life he learns lessons from the past, and the realities of inequality. He flourishes with the bond of friendship; endures the pain of senseless death; finds the courage to stand up for what he believes is right; and comes to realize he is his father's son. This story explores how two unsettling chapters in American history, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, affect the fate of a family, a town, and two boyhood friends."

Rewrite RedemptionRewrite Redemption by JH Walker

"She’s sixteen. He’s seventeen. They don’t know each other…at least not yet. She has a secret and her whole life revolves around keeping it. Every few months and with little warning, she simply disappears, pulled into the past for hours or even days. She’s terrified it will happen in front of someone, changing her life forever. So far, the only witnesses have been her parents, and that didn’t end well. She has no control over it and no idea why it happens to her. She wants answers. He has answers—at least he understands what’s going on. He has a secret, too. He’s part of an organization that goes back in time to rewrite reality. But he also has a problem. He broke the organization’s number-one rule by altering his own timeline. As punishment, he’s been blocked from time travel, which is most unfortunate. Because the changes he made to his timeline, accidentally resulted in disaster for his family. A disaster he’s now prevented from repairing. No one can travel beneath the organization’s radar except a Shadow. But they’re rare, so rare he’s never even met one. Then he moves to her town."

The Runaway Queen (The Bane Chronicles, #2)The Runaway Queen by Cassandra Clare

"Magnus Bane has a royal role in the French Revolution—if the angry mobs don’t spoil his spells. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles. While in France, immortal warlock Magnus Bane finds himself attempting to rescue the royal family from the horrors of the French Revolution—after being roped into this mess by a most attractive count. Naturally, the daring escape calls for invisible air balloons…"

The Program (The Program, #1)The Program by Suzanne Young

"In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program. Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories. Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them."

The Conduit (Gryphon, #1)The Conduit/Embrace/Sacrifice by Stacey Rourke.

"All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world. While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn’t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn’t have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others’ nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever—their grandmother in a leopard print bikini."

City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3)City of Glass by Cassandra Clare.

"To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters - never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight. As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?"

Monthly Review: May

Welcome to Turning Pages!

few months back, my goal was to post a TBR list at the beginning of every month, and a "Monthly Review" at the end of the month. Why? To set some goals, to have something to work towards, instead of just aimlessly blogging or picking up a book I know I shouldn't be reading because I have to read a different book first. Also it allows me and you to see what I posted the entire month, and if you want to check out a specific post, feel free to click the link!

I'm still working on how I want to layout this type of post, and on a few other kinks. But if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful.
