When news of a serial killer spreads throughout her new school, Elle worries that the Reaper has been leaving her his calling card in the form of cigarette butts on her doormat and an unusual ribbon in her locker. With the help of Brian, a boy she meets at a flea market, she discovers that this isn't her first encounter with the murderer and that her father has been concealing her true identity for the past twelve years. But despite her father's desperate attempts to protect her, Elle still comes face to face with the darkness she has been running from her whole life. Trapped in the woods and with help hundreds of miles away, will Elle be able to confront the Reaper and reclaim the life she lost?"

"Don’t Let the Serial Killer Fool You. It’s a Romance. By Julie Anne Lindsey
I know my story sounds like it’s about a serial killer, but it’s not. Not really. Really, it’s about a lot of things. Like discovering strength where you believe there is weakness and learning you’re much more than ordinary, more than “okay looking,” more than your grades. Deceived is about love.
I’m a die hard, drop dead, fan-my-face-and-swoon-in-public, romantic. It’s true. I think love makes the world go around. It definitely makes life more interesting, dramatic, and challenging. When I settled into the storyline for Deceived, my mind wandered off to find love. Yes, the Reaper was outside her window creeping, but inside, safe from the crazy, my mind saw the beauty of possibilities ahead. I wanted my heroine to know love. Love is the fiber of absolutely everything. She needed it. I gave it to her.
Elle loves her dad, despite the distance between them. Love is complicated. She loved her mom so much that she blames herself for losing memories of her. Love is hard. She holds those memories like treasures in her heart and she holds out the hope of finding something more in her relationship with her dad. Love is hopeful.
Then, there’s Pixie. Elle’s first real bestie. They have a deep bond that roommates often share. The girls seem very different on the outsides, but inside, they connect. They have an understanding and they like what they have. Really, we’re all more alike that we want to admit and when we get to know people – the real them, not the face they put out there for others to judge – we find common ground, respect and understanding.
Until the story begins, Elle is a bit of a loner, but as she settles into her new school, knowing she has an entire year to spend in one place, she opens her mind to the possibility of roots, shallow as they might be, she wants them. Little does she realize that when you open yourself up to people, they will change you. In a very short time, Elle finds a place she belongs. Friends for a lifetime. And love.
Brian. *Deep contented sigh* Brian has love. Love of friends and family, siblings, parents, neighbors. He has what Elle wants so bad….and that wasn’t a euphemism…but if I’m honest, she wants that too. LOL. Brian and Elle have an instant connection she doesn’t understand, but he does. His family and hers are intertwined in ways that make the story more complex and hopefully more satisfying. She doesn’t see the big picture at first, but it doesn’t matter. She knows there’s something about him that speaks to her on another level and she likes that. She wants that. She chases that.
Do you ever crave those old “I saw her across a crowded room and knew I would love her forever,” stories? I do. My parents have a story like that. The fireworks went off and they just knew. No amount of explaining how they “just knew” would do their 40 year marriage justice. Still. They just knew. And they were right.
I wanted Elle to find that kind of earth shaking, life altering love, too. As I wrote their scenes, and considered their reactions to one another, I found myself saying their lines aloud and making the faces they made. I blushed to myself and curled my toes and wanted so badly for them to see their thing through, despite it all. Age differences. Serial killers. Protocols and threat of death aside, I cheered for them.
So, yeah. The Reaper is a serious sicko. A real nutty banana. You don’t want to be on his radar and unfortunately, Elle is the only thing on his radar, but she finds more than a way out of his crosshairs. In this story, she finds love, family, friendship and a future. Possibly, one with the man of her dreams.
What can I say? I’m a romantic."
