2nd Annual End of the Year Survey!

Hey everyone! The new year is coming up soon, tomorrow actually! I coincidentally stumbled across this blog called The Perpetual Page Turner, and saw the survey she was hosting! It looked like a lot of fun so I decided to answer the questions myself!

If you answer these questions yourself, leave a link to your post in the comments below! I would love to read what you have to say!

Here I go:

1. Best Book You Read In 2011?

Turning Pages was born late in February of 2011! I started this blog, when I found out I have a real passion for reading, reviewing, and recommending books to people. Throughout these last ten months I've read over sixty books! I can't even believe it! It blows my mind every time I think about how far Turning Pages has come in such a short time.

With reading and reviewing all of these books, I don't think I can just pick one! It's just too hard. The last really good book I read was The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab, check out my review to see what I thought!

2. Most Disappointing Book/Book You Wish You Loved More Than You Did?

The Hungers Games! My friends at school, and my blogging buddies kept threatening me if I didn't read. Every review I read before hand said it was intense, action filled, and awesome! I finally went to my local Barnes and Noble and picked up my very own copy!

I don't think I picked it up for about two weeks!

The beginning was kind of slow. But my friend at school, kept reassuring me that it got better as I went along. And it did! But there were just things that bothered, and annoyed me. While I was reading, I felt like Katniss was just hiding the whole time, before she even went into the ring, she was always talking about her hunting skills. But the whole time Katniss was there, she didn't do much besides hide.

Even with this, I decided on reading Catching Fire, and LOVED it! I'm probably going to give The Hunger Games another try next year!

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2011?

Most surprising book for me was City of Bones! I read the back and it didn't seem to catch my attention, it just wasn't what I usually enjoy reading. But my dad went ahead and bought it anyways, explaining to be as a blogger and reviewer I should be branching out and reading different things.

I actually started reading City of Bones that night, and was more than halfway through before I went to sleep that night!

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2011?

That would have to The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, by Maggie Stiefvater, I love that series!

5. Best series you discovered in 2011?

Pretty Little Liars! There are tons of new books by Sara Shepard that I need to read ( Pretty Little Liars books 8, 9, 10, 11, and her Lying Game series)! But I really enjoy her writing style!

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2011?

I meet and communicated with tons of great people through blogging, and book signings! I've had so much fun meeting authors, other bloggers, and just new people! Turning Pages has given me a huge opportunity!

The first author I meet was Kimberly Derting, she's amazing! She's funny, and great to talk to! I hope I get the chance to read her new books, The Pledge and the third book in The Body Finder series!

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

Heist Society! I wasn't sure if I should read it, I was a bit hesitant. But after finally picking it up, I've built this huge love for books with mystery, secret agents and spies! LOVE them now!

Can't wait to read Uncommon Criminals, and Ally Carter's other series!

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2011?

Pure by Julianna Baggott! I'm reading it right now, and it's mind blowing! It's insane! I usually don't like reading books about the future, but this book change my whole mind set. Sadly I'm more than halfway through, I might have to read it again once I'm done(:

9. Book you most anticipated in 2011?

Haha! I don't know! I was excited about reading books, it didn't really matter to me if they just came out or if they've been out for a while. When I first started Turning Pages, and followed other blogs, I knew I was way behind, and needed to catch up with the book world!

But towards the end of 2011, the book was pretty excited about was Iron Queen! I haven't read it nor the second book yet, but I plan on reading and finishing the series in February!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2011?

Hands down, The Wolves of Mercy Falls has beautiful covers! And the color of the font matches the color of the cover, it's amazing! I haven't seen any other books that have that.

But I also really like the covers of the Mortal Instrument series, I'm also really excited about finishing that series!

11. Most memorable character in 2011?

Waverly in Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan! I usually enjoy romance stories, where the boy saves the girl he loves, and he sweeps her off her feet. But on the other hand, I do love a strong female character, that can take care of herself!

Glow is amazing, if you haven't read if yet you really should get your hands on a copy ASAP!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2011?

Girl Wonder! I didn't think much of it at first! I didn't see many reviews, my very book talkative friends, never said one peep about it. I gave it a shoot, and it was amazing! Its about a girl who wasn't the smartest, but her main goal was to finish Senior year in high school, strong, and make it into college the next fall.

When she meets the most popular girl in her new school, and becomes friends with her. The main character finds out this girl, isn't what everyone thinks she is.

It was incredible how much her life changed in such a little time, and how she brought it right back on track before the book ended! Girl Wonder is a book, I could read ten times over!

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2011?

No questions asked, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I know what it feels like to have someone you know commit suicide. And you just think, Wow, they could of just came to me and talked to me about. Or how could I have not noticed he/she was going through something so tough?

Thirteen Reasons Why, really opened my eyes! It made me feel every emotion! I loved it, and can't wait to read more from Jay Asher.

14. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2011 to finally read?

Almost every book I've read! I didn't start blogging until two months into 2011! I was behind, and everyone was recommending books I should read. But if I had to choose one, I would say the Twilight series. I think that series and few other books, are what got me into reading, and blogging.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2011?

I'm not exactly sure! But you can just check out my Teaser Tuesday! Every Tuesday, I make a post with two teasers from the book I was currently reading at that time!

16. Book That You Read In 2011 That Would Be Most Likely To Reread In 2012?

Thirteen Reasons Why! It was such an intense book, I might have to read it a few times, to finally let it all sink in.

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

Beautiful Creatures!!! I honestly enjoyed it! But there was like four or five times where I wish I could have just jumped between the pages, and grabbed everybody by the shoulders and give them a good shake. I just felt like somethings where WAY too over dramatic.

Book Blogging/Reading Life in 2011 (optional)

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2011?

I've found so many great blogs and bloggers, through my own blog, twitter, goodreads, and even paperback swap! I don't think I could just point out one blog!

I'm so thankful to have meet, and continue to meet, people that love reading and discussing books as much as I do(:

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2011?

I'm always proud of my reviews, but I think the best and my favorite would have to be my review of Tempest by Julie Cross! I even got an email from the publisher telling me how much they enjoyed it!

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?

In My Mailbox, usually gets a few comments, and I love discussing my excitement for the new books I got. I don't think I've ever had a real heated discussion on Turning Pages!

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else's blog?

Before reading a book, I try to read a few reviews that don't have spoilers!

This usually causes me to set standards for the books, or help create things I expect to get out of the book!

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I went to a book signing throughout the summer, that I'll never forget! There were five or six different authors, each of them were hilarious, they answered questions, read parts of there books, gave out a ton of swag, and signed all of the books I brought and purchased there.

Kimberly Derting, Amanda Grace, Lisa Schroeder, and a few others were there! Also a few bloggers came too, which was a great time!(:

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2011?

When I got my first follow! I remember I ran straight to my parents to show them! I was so happy, to know that someone knew I existed!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

My 250 follower giveaway was a hit!

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

My reviews! I wish I got more comments.

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

Paperback Swap! I love that website, I can get read of old books I don't want anymore, and get books that I've been wanting to read for a while!

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

Nope, this year is the first year I got the chance to join challenges!

Looking Ahead...

1. One Book You Didn't Get To In 2011 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2012?

I'm not sure! I do plan on catching up, and start reading some series! Like Blue Bloods, Vampire Academy, Evermore series, and tons more. I guess I just really want to read and start more series!

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2012?

I can't wait til The Last Echo comes out! I love Kimberly Derting, and here books! The Body Finder, and The Desires of the Dead were amazing; can't wait!!

3. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2012?

-600 followers, by the end of the year.
-read and review over 100 books.
-become more active on youtube, twitter, goodreads, and even Turning Pages.
-I also want to go to more book signings, have more author interviews, and giveaways!

Captivating Thursday #1

One of my favorite things to do, is just go into a pet store, and look around at the different types of fish! Or even the weird looking reptiles, snakes, rats, rabbits, or even ferrets! We wouldn't have to buy any, but I really like just strolling around, looking at all of these different types of animals!

Top Ten Tuesday #1

Welcome to my very first "Top Ten Tuesday"! Yaa-hooooo!

This week's top Ten Tuesday Tuesday, is the top ten books we read in 2011! This is going to be so hard, I read tons of books which I enjoyed! And I can only pick ten? Craaaazyy!

In specific order:

Mercy by Rebecca Lim

"Mercy in an exile from heaven with shattered memories of who she used to be. She’s doomed to “wake” repeatedly on earth in a new body, each time assuming a new life. During the day she survives in the human world on instinct and at night her dreams are haunted by her lost love, who pleads with her to find him.
But this time is different. When Mercy wakes up she meets Ryan, an eighteen-year-old reeling from the loss of his twin sister, Lauren, who was kidnapped two years ago. Only Mercy and Ryan believe his sister is still alive. For the first time since she can remember, Mercy has a purpose: she can help. So she doesn’t understand why the man in her dreams cautions her not to interfere. But as Ryan and Mercy come closer to solving the mystery of Lauren’s disappearance, danger looms just one step behind.

Will Mercy be able to harness her extraordinary power in time?

The first in a dazzling new series, Mercy masterfully weaves romance, mystery and the supernatural into a spell-binding tale that readers will devour."

Tempest by Julie Cross

"The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world."

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

"A fresh, urban twist on the classic tale of star-crossed lovers.

When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart."

Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

"When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for the past year, he doesn't want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him in Colorado. When he meets Kiara Westford, a good girl totally unlike any of the girls he's usually drawn to, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she's too good for him. But will he put his pride aside when he realizes that being with Kiara might finally allow him to be his true self?"

But I Love Him by Amanda Grace

"Sometimes at night, I wake up and stare at the heart for hours. I think of how I collected each piece from the beach, how I glued it all together into one big sculpture. I wonder if Connor realizes what it means, that he'll always have a piece of me no matter what happens. Each piece of glass is another piece of myself that I gave to him.

It's too bad I didn't keep any pieces for myself.

At the beginning of senior year, Ann was a smiling, straight-A student and track star with friends and a future. Then she met a haunted young man named Connor. Only she can heal his emotional scars; only he could make her feel so loved - and needed. Ann can't recall the pivotal moment it all changed, when she surrendered everything to be with him, but by graduation, her life has become a dangerous high wire act. Just one mistake could trigger Connor's rage, a senseless storm of cruel words and violence damaging everything - and everyone - in its path.

This evocative slideshow of flashbacks reveals a heartbreaking story of love gone terribly wrong."

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

"Belly’s never been the kind of girl that things happen to. Year after year, she’s spent her summers at the beach house with Conrad and Jeremiah. The boys never noticed Belly noticing them. And every summer she hoped it would be different. This time, it was. But the summer Belly turned pretty was the summer that changed everything. For better, and for worse."

It's Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han

"Can summer be truly summer without Cousins Beach?
It used to be that Belly counted the days until summer, until she was back at Cousins Beach with Conrad and Jeremiah. But not this year. Not after Susannah got sick again and Conrad stopped caring. Everything that was right and good has fallen apart, leaving Belly wishing summer would never come.

But when Jeremiah calls saying Conrad has disappeared, Belly knows what she must do to make things right again. And it can only happen back at the beach house, the three of them together, the way things used to be. If this summer really and truly is the last summer, it should end the way it started--at Cousins Beach."

Shut Out Kody Keplinger

"Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it's a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part,Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy's car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend's attention.
Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players' girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won't get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don't count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. And Lissa never sees her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling, coming."

Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

""Don't worry, Anna. I'll tell her, okay? Just let me think about the best way to do it."
"Okay."
"Promise me? Promise you won't say anything?"
"Don't worry." I laughed. "It's our secret, right?"

According to her best friend Frankie, twenty days in Zanzibar Bay is the perfect opportunity to have a summer fling, and if they meet one boy ever day, there's a pretty good chance Anna will find her first summer romance. Anna lightheartedly agrees to the game, but there's something she hasn't told Frankie—-she's already had that kind of romance, and it was with Frankie's older brother, Matt, just before his tragic death one year ago.

Beautifully written and emotionally honest, this is a debut novel that explores what it truly means to love someone and what it means to grieve, and ultimately, how to make the most of every single moment this world has to offer."

The Near Witch by Victoria Schawb

"The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near.
These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget."

It's Monday What Are You Reading? #1

Hey everyone!

PureThe new year is coming up, and we're all making new goals we want to accomplish. My main goal is to become more active and write more reviews. Instead of starting on the first of January, I'm actually starting now. "It's Monday What Are You Reading?" is a new meme, I want to try out, I love sharing what I'm reading! So here it goes!!

Today I'm reading Pure by Julianna Baggott. It's actually about the future, and when the human race is divided and fighting against one another. There is one type of human, which is exactly like us, called Pure. They live inside this dome, where there is no real air, plants, animals, or sky.

Outside of the dome, live humans that survived the denotations, but each of them is disfigured in their own way. For example the main character Pressia, has a dolls head, instead of her hand.

Pure, is pack to the brim with action. Within the first chapter I was sucked into the story, and its hard to put it down! I can't wait to see how the story ends and to finally be able to write my review. The book is about 450 pages, and I'm about one third of the way through.

Summary:

"We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.

When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again."

I'd Tell You That I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill you, by Ally Carter.

"Cammie Morgan is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a fairly typical all-girls school—that is, if every school taught advanced martial arts in PE and the latest in chemical warfare in science, and students received extra credit for breaking CIA codes in computer class. The Gallagher Academy might claim to be a school for geniuses but it’s really a school for spies.
Even though Cammie is fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways, she has no idea what to do when she meets an ordinary boy who thinks she’s an ordinary girl. Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, or track him through town with the skill of a real “pavement artist”—but can she maneuver a relationship with someone who can never know the truth about her?

Cammie Morgan may be an elite spy-in-training, but in her sophomore year, she’s on her most dangerous mission—falling in love."

Hardback:

Paranormalcy, by Kiersten White.

"Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal."

Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy, by Ally Carter.

"After staking out, obtaining, and then being forced to give up her first boyfriend, Josh, all Cammie Morgan wants is a peaceful semester. But that's easier said than done when you're a CIA legacy and go to the premier school in the world...for spies.

Cammie may have a genius IQ , but there are still a lot of things she doesn't know. Like, will her ex-boyfriend even remember she exists? And how much trouble is she really in after what happened last semester? And most of all, why is her mother acting so strangely?

Despite Cammie's best intentions to be a normal student, danger seems to follow her. She and her best friends learn that their school is going to play host to some mysterious guests--code name: "Blackthorne. Then she's blamed for a security breach that leaves the school's top-secret status at risk.

Soon Cammie and her friends are crawling through walls and surveilling the school to learn the truth about Blackthorne and clear Cammie's name. Even though they have confidence in their spy skills, this time the targets are tougher (and hotter), and the stakes for Cammie's heart--and her beloved school--are higher than ever."
