Book Review #36: The Devouring

Title: The Devouring.
Author: Simon Holt.
Format: Paperback.
Series: Yes #1.
Publisher: Little Brown.
Published Date: September 1, 2008.

Summary:

""When dark creeps in and eats the light,
Bury your fears on Sorry Night.
For in the winter's blackest hours,
Comes the feasting of the Vours,
No one can see it, the life they stole,
Your body's here but not your soul..."
THE VOURS: Evil, demonic beings that inhabit human bodies on Sorry Night, the darkest hours of the winter solstice.
When Reggie reads about the Vours in a mysterious old journal, she assumes they are just the musings of an anonymous lunatic. But when her little brother, Henry, begins to act strangely, it's clear that these creatures exist beyond a madwoman's imagination, and Reggie finds out what happens when fears come to life.
To save the people she loves, Reggie must learn to survive in a world of nightmares. Can she devour her own fears before they devour her?
The Devouring is an engrossing tale of terror that will have you wondering: what if your worst fears became your living nightmare?"

Cover: 3/5

The cover looks like a great cover for a scary book like this, but to be honest it doesn't connect to the story. There was no purple smoke in the story, not anywhere! But what made me give this a score of three out of five, was the girl; the way her makeup is running!(:

Characters-

Favorite:

My favorite would have to be Henry or Aaron. I know you don't get to hear a lot of Henry (because his body was just overtaken by a Vour)! But he just seems like the perfect little brother, who looks up to his sister.

On the other hand Aaron, isn't the bravest or strongest guy. But he seems like a great best friend, that cares a lot about Reggie.

Least Favorite:

Aha, this is easy! Reggie and Henry's dad. What a jerk!? Does he not see what's going on right in front of his face? Instead of always getting mad at Reggie and making her be the cleaning lady, maybe he should spend more time with his kids and clean up his share too.

He made me so angry throughout the book! How can he not know what's going on? Maybe he should ask his children every once in a while, "How are you?" "How was school?" and "Anything new?". Come on! Open your eyes!

Story Line:

I'm not really that into reading scary stories, but I have to admit this book was amazing! I didn't have very high expectations in the first place, but The Devouring definitively proved me wrong!

Even though at some parts I just wanted to take Reggie's dad's shoulders and shake him! I thought the beginning was smooth and slowly lead you into what was happening and the end left you satisfied(:
